Hangs and crashes when having a large play queue

This is an upstream Google issue. Please try queueing less tracks for the time being.

Where’s the crash report stored?

Android/data/org.sunsetware.phocid/files/crash.txt in your external storage. Depending on your system, you might need to connect your phone to a computer to see this file.

File

Where can Phocid find files from?

Non-technical answer: I don’t know. If your location isn’t working, try putting files in your device’s default Music folder, and remove special characters (like leading dots) in their paths.

Technical answer: Phocid reads files listed in your MediaStore. Its exact behavior is not documented, its implementation may vary across devices and contains some known surprises.

New files aren’t showing up

It’s because the app responsible for adding your files didn’t notify MediaStore (which it should, so you probably want to file an issue with its devs). You can try a manual rescan in Phocid, enable “Always rescan MediaStore” in preferences, or use some other methods to force MediaStore to rescan. See Where can Phocid find files from?

Why doesn’t Phocid let me pick a folder like other apps do?

Because that method is slow and doesn’t provide access to full file paths (which is important to the playlist feature).

Metadata

What exactly does “Advanced metadata extraction” do?

Without “Advanced metadata extraction” enabled, music metadata are taken directly from Android’s pre-scanned database called MediaStore. Unfortunately MediaStore only reads a limited amount of metadata and is notoriously bad at doing its job right — that’s why Phocid offers an option to extract metadata by itself at the cost of extra scanning time (using jaudiotagger and others). This may be unacceptably slow for SD card users with a large library, thus it’s disabled by default.

Enable “Advanced metadata extraction” in preferences.

Lyrics

Where does Phocid read lyrics from?

Phocid reads external LRC lyrics that have the same filename (excluding extension) in the same folder. Access to LRC files with scoped storage is undocumented behavior and might not work on some devices or future Android versions. Please inform me if that happens.

Embedded lyrics are read from LYRICS, UNSYNCEDLYRICS or other fields specified by this table. They are only read when tracks are scanned with “Advanced metadata extraction” enabled.
